Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing used to restore and maintain health and well-being. It has been practised and refined in China and other Eastern countries and has a continuous clinical history of at least 2,500 years (it’s earliest roots stem back approximately 5000 years).
In China it still features in mainstream healthcare, both as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional Western medicine. Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world In the UK more and more people are finding out how acupuncture treatment can help them to restore their health.
The Chinese discovered that there are pathways (known as meridians) that run throughout the body and carry a vital energy called Qi (pronounced “chee”). For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, Qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked leading to an imbalance resulting in pain or illness. In certain instances, traditional acupuncture can be an effective therapy to help restore balance and promote physical and emotional harmony.
The skill of an acupuncturist lies in their ability to make a traditional diagnosis from what is often a complex pattern of disharmony. The exact pattern and degree of disharmony is unique to each individual and therefore, each person is treated uniquely.
Some people turn to acupuncture to help with a specific symptom or condition. Others choose to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a preventative measure, or to improve their general sense of wellbeing. Because traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of conditions. Many people return to acupuncture again and again because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.
In 2009 the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommended that acupuncture should be made available on the NHS, as a cost effective short-term treatment for the management of early, persistent non-specific lower back pain.
Acupuncture is a popular treatment and we have enjoyed good communication with local GP’s over the years whom continue to refer patients to the centre for treatment.
